Instagram and Facebook AR filters

Though small and simple, making an AR filter is a lot of fun. It lets you distill a visual idea into a bite size piece and can be distributed to everyone with facebook or instagram. An unexpected joy is that other artists and filmmakers will sometimes use your filters to create their own work. An entirely new work comes out long after the filter itself is programmed.

Optical Camo

Using custom shaders, I managed to reproduce the cloaking effect that took an entire team of vfx gurus in the 80’s. This filter ended up winning the Spark AR Challenge for segmentation.

Out of Phase

I tried to reproduce an effect I made in touchdesigner using instagram, but without a 3 dimensional texture and a large pool of memory. It’s become one of my favorite effects. (With more than 1 million views in 2 weeks)

Electroclash

I made a little music video with this filter, I liked it so much. It decomposes a face mesh the further you are from the camera, giving it a depth awareness. The music is from the seminal Electroclash band, Fischerspooner.

Vertigo

Hitchcock popularized the method of zooming a camera out while moving it closer to a subject in his seminal movie, Vertigo. I wanted to fake the effect of horror using computer vision and custom shaders.
